Произошло 13 декабря 1862. Крупное поражение северян во время Гражданской войны [Civil War]. Армия на Потомаке [Army of the Potomac] численностью 122 тыс. человек под командованием А. Бернсайда [Burnside, Ambrose], назначенного командующим вместо генерала Макклеллана [McClellan, George Brinton], атаковала южан (78 тыс. человек), занявших позиции недалеко от г. Фредериксберга, шт. Вирджиния. Южанам под командованием генерала Ли [Lee, Robert Edward] после упорного боя удалось отбить атаку. Учитывая численное превосходство неприятеля, генерал Ли не стал преследовать северян, терпящих поражение. Северяне потеряли более 12 тыс. человек убитыми и ранеными, южане - около 5 тыс. После этого боя генерал Бернсайд подал в отставку с поста командующего. На месте сражения сегодня расположен Национальный военно-исторический заповедник "Поля сражений Фредериксберга и округа Спотсильвания" [Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields National Military Park]
